La demande d’une grève mondiale menée et contrôlée par des femmes a été suscitée par les féministes, les syndicalistes et les militantes lors de la People’s General Assembly (Assemblée générale du peuple) qui s’est tenue en 2015 à New York. Depuis lors, les appels se sont répandus et ont obtenu un soutien; en 2017, le Women’s Global Call for Climate Justice a soutenu l’appel à la grève mondiale des femmes à partir du 8 mars.
Cet appel à une grève mondiale des femmes le 8 mars 2020 a été lancé par le Forum Asie-Pacifique sur les femmes, le droit et le développement (APWLD), un réseau dominant d’organisations féministes et de militantes locales en Asie Pacifique. Les 236 membres de l’APWLD représentent des groupes de femmes diverses de 27 pays de la région Asie-Pacifique.
Réseau-DESC - Le Réseau international pour les droits économiques, sociaux et culturels a par la suite soutenu la grève, connecté les luttes locales pour faire remonter la grève mondiale des femmes au niveau mondial et fourni un soutien pour renforcer le leadership des participants dans les régions.
